The Infinity’ EP Cover

His name is Ross McMillan but for this release he goes by the moniker Carlos Nilmmns: a near perfect anagram of his name that cheekily presents you with a slight challenge in pronunciation. Just like his music sometimes will include some small, clever, surprising element that’ll make you tip your hat to the DJ while dancing.

This France-based musician, DJ and producer has released stuff on TRAX, Circus Company, Cocoon and other prestigious labels; this time he’s coming back to Ornaments after a couple of years of absence with the “Infinity” EP, the 51st release from the Berliner label.

“Infinity” is a dancefloor journey and it starts cinematically with “To Infinity”, a relentless ascent that is meant to be an introduction to the danceable mid-section of the record. You shouldn’t be afraid to let you be transported by its strings and marching percussions: on the contrary the track’s indicative of Nilmmns’ style of subtle experimentation with structures and forms. As Nilmmns often does, the tunes here wink at the past; but they’re not derivative, there’s no pointless nostalgia. The best example is Chicago-tinged “The Second Message” which also features poet Keter Darker, a frequent collaborator of Nilmmns, on vocals. You’ll then land on the jumpy “The Next”, with its electro bass synth, and then on “Smile”, where Detroit reverberates through a stylish techno groove. The journey reaches its conclusion with the spacey title track, punctuated midway by undertones of jazzy melodies.

We wanted to give you a taste of Carlos’ dancefloor sensibilities, so for this premiere we selected the B2 track: “The Pass”. We were seduced by the bouncy bassline, and drawn by the echoing handclaps, but it’s the wavy groove of synths, with those bubbly droplets of melody, that made us fall in love.

In conclusion, I have to own up to the label that they made a splendid job with the packaging: I would buy the record just to add this marbled beauty to my collection. You can find the vinyl and the digital album on Ornaments’ Bandcamp.
